Bonsai originated in China over 2,000 years ago and was later adopted by the Japanese who introduced it to the western world in the 20th century. The word bonsai comes from two characters: bon meaning tray or pot, and sai to plant. It is pronounced bone-sigh.

The art behind bonsai is the ability to bring out the trees inherent beauty by achieving the look of an aged tree found in the many varieties of natures landscape. This is done in miniature form by the pruning of branches & roots, and by periodically wiring the branches for a desired shape. The ultimate aim is to produce a tree of perfect proportion and in harmony with its container.

At Stone Tree Nursery we grow and propagate our bonsai. We carry both indoor and outdoor varieties that are well suited for success. Some examples of outdoor varieties are Juniper, Pine, Larch, Japanese Maple and Rhododendron. For indoor, you'll find Olive, Ficus, Serissa, Eugenia, and Holly.  For those who would like to learn about this hobby, Keith teaches Bonsai classes in the spring and fall.
